City and Wharf Hockey League
The City and Wharf Hockey League (CAWHL) is the largest corporate summer hockey league in the capital, reaching an estimated 1000 players across the squads for 24 league teams drawn from a range of blue chip employers. Mixed 11-a-side matches are played three to five times a week for four months to decide the league champions before an exciting 6-a-side tournament to contest the cup.
Wapping Hockey Club Chairman Matt Patterson: “CAWHL offers a different way to play from the traditional winter league model, and different again from club-led summer league teams. This means our game reaches participants who wouldn’t otherwise be playing hockey.”
CAWHL is operated alongside a free “Back to Hockey” programme, meaning the participant companies have something to offer for everyone. Two phases allow the league to stream into several tiers, offering a truly inclusive environment for everyone. This means despite the intense competition that can ensue, participants encompass national league and international players through to beginners. Then a party atmosphere ensues with the 6aside tournament evening and of course an end of season awards dinner.
Hon. President Stuart Burnside: “Setting up a corporate team is as simple as sending an email round the office or a gym or asking a few pals. There’s usually a few people who’ve played at least some hockey, there’s then plenty of people who think mixed sport followed by pub sounds appealing, and finally, we offer to teach any beginners from scratch.
Participating in the league can also satisfy company commitments to corporate social responsibility (CSR). As well as funding the costs of the tournament, entry fees go towards ensuring we can provide affordable hockey for less well-off residents of Tower Hamlets. In this way, we like to think our members and the players in our league help break down barriers that might otherwise exist between Canary Wharf and the rest of the borough."
