A message to our Alumni
Dear Wapping Alumni,
I'm writing to you first and foremost because this season we are celebrating our 30th anniversary. That's right, it's 30 years since Wapping Hockey Club was founded and it's incredible to think how much has changed in that time - we now play a number of our matches on the same pitches the World Cup was played on at Lee Valley, but at the same time we have stayed true to our roots as a local club playing at John Orwell. Secondly, I want to encourage all of you to sign up to our new website to keep informed about what the club is up to and even to think about signing up for our social / casual membership if you aren't quite ready to admit your playing days are over!
Save the date: We are firming up the final details, but we are planning a celebration dinner on Saturday 9 February in Central London and we would love for you to join the current Exec, our founding president Tim Poeton, and fellow alumni to celebrate this momentous occasion. Tickets will be between £50 and £75 per head and partners are more than welcome. We'll also likely be arranging some friendly hockey for the next day at John Orwell (Sunday 10 February). We will be circulating more details soon and if you want to find out more there is information below about how to keep in touch with the club.
Keeping in touch with our alumni as we become and older and larger club is important. In the past it is something we have perhaps not been brilliant at - traditionally Wapping has been a club people played at for a few years while they lived in central London and then moved on. However that is no longer the case, the footprint of where our members live has expanded well beyond Wapping or indeed even Tower Hamlets. A large number of our current and former members also played at the club for many seasons, a few even met their significant other here, and we're even at the point now where the next generation is coming along to our Kidds sessions!
You may have seen that we have recently launched a new website - www.wappinghockeyclub.com. The new system makes it much easier for us to communicate with different types of members, for example adult playing members, junior members and parents, and alumni. So you can sign up safe in the knowledge that you will only get communications relevant to you.
If you do want to sign up to the website, there are a couple of options depending on how involved you want to be. The first step for both is to complete the form at https://wappinghc.clubbuzz.co.uk/join. In the drop down box beside "Sport" just select the option relevant to you (see below for a description of each). Of course you are also welcome to sign up as a full playing member if you wish!
Alumni hockey - you will be signed up as an alumni of the club, free of charge. You won't receive any emails regarding playing for the club, only general club communications.
Social hockey- we've rebadged our social membership as social / casual membership in an effort to make playing more accessible to those who aren't able to commit to training and playing every week during the season. It costs £50 and provides you with the following benefits:
- Play up to 4 league games, or attend up to 4 training sessions, or a mixture of both.
- Unlimited social hockey, which comprises:
- All Sunday mixed hockey
- The Tower League for women (played on Friday nights or Sundays fortnightly through the winter)
- Play for the Remains (O-35 women) or Vets (O-40 men) in the winter (at present those are our only two age group teams, however dependent on demand we can always expand to incorporate other age groups!)
- Play for our O-30 teams in the summer England Hockey Championships
- Attend our Back to Hockey sessions throught the summer
- Should you find that you have use up your allowance of training sessions and league games but can't commit to playing the whole season and paying a full membership then our Treasurer, Ollie, will happy to have a conversation with you about what might suit you best
We do also post a lot of content on social media so would encourage you to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram using the handles in my signature below.
Finally, I just want to draw your attention to a couple of other matters:
Wapping HC merchandise - the club sells a range of branded merchandise, including a couple of limited edition 30th anniversary items. We'll be selling these at Lee Valley on 29 September so feel free to drop by and watch a bit of hockey at the same time. If you can't make that day but want to make a purchase please drop me an email (my address is below) and we can make other arrangements. View the full range at https://wappinghc.clubbuzz.co.uk/clublife/club_kit
Great Britain Hockey Anniversary International at Lee Valley - On 3 October Wapping has an allocation of seats at the historic 'Anniversary International' event, commemorating the 30th anniversary of Great Britain's gold medal at the 1988 Olympics, being held at one our home pitches at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre. For more information go to https://wappinghc.clubbuzz.co.uk/clublife/event/303300
Fundraising & Sponsorship sub-committee - We are in the process of setting up a dedicated sub-committee to look at our legal structure, as well as how we raise revenue additional to subs and match fees. We've targeted current members to help out to date, but if you are interested in helping at all or even have contacts you can pass on then please get in touch with me. In particular we are looking for people who have experinece in corporate/charity law; finance; fundraising; marketing; grant writing; sports administration or sports bodies.
Apologies for the length of this message but there is a lot happening this season and we'd love for you all to be involved. Please sign up to the website and social media, hold the date for our 30th anniversary dinner on Saturday 9 February and we'll provide more information on how to buy tickets as soon as possible.
Any other queries or comments don't hesitate to get in touch.
